Invisalign In Ottawa
Straighter Teeth Without the Braces
Nobody wants to spend a year or two with a mouth full of metal. Invisalign straightens your teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners that are virtually invisible when worn, so you can get the smile you want without changing the way you look while you get there. At Inova Dental, we offer Invisalign treatment for teens and adults at both of our Ottawa locations.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a modern orthodontic treatment that uses a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners to gradually shift your teeth into their correct positions. Each set of aligners is worn for approximately two weeks before moving on to the next in the series, with each tray moving the teeth a small, precise amount according to your custom treatment plan.
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are removable, meaning you take them out to eat, drink, brush, and floss. The aligners are made from smooth, BPA-free plastic with no wires or brackets, making them significantly more comfortable and far less noticeable than conventional metal braces.
What Can Invisalign Fix?
Invisalign is effective for a wide range of orthodontic concerns, including:
- Crowded teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Open bite
- Slightly misaligned or rotated teeth
Invisalign works well for mild to moderate cases. For more complex bite corrections, traditional braces or a combined approach may be more appropriate. We will assess your teeth at your consultation and give you an honest recommendation on whether Invisalign is the right fit for your situation.
Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces
Invisalign
- Clear and virtually invisible when worn
- Removable for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing
- Smooth plastic with no wires or brackets
- Fewer in-office visits required, with many clinics offering virtual check-ins
- Easier to maintain oral hygiene throughout treatment
- Not suitable for very complex cases
Traditional Braces
- Visible metal or ceramic brackets and wires
- Fixed and cannot be removed during treatment
- More effective for complex bite corrections
- Require more frequent in-office adjustments
- Food restrictions apply throughout treatment
- Generally more affordable for complex cases
For most adults and teens with mild to moderate alignment concerns, Invisalign offers all the results of braces with significantly more comfort and discretion.
Invisalign Treatment Options

Invisalign Comprehensive
For more complex cases involving significant bite correction or longer treatment timelines. The most complete Invisalign option.
Invisalign Teen
Designed specifically for younger patients with compliance indicators built into the aligners to help track wear time, plus free replacement aligners included in the plan.
The Invisalign Process at Inova Dental
Consultation and 3D Scan
We begin with a thorough assessment of your teeth, bite, and orthodontic goals. Using digital 3D scanning technology, we take precise impressions of your teeth without the discomfort of traditional moulds. Your custom treatment plan is mapped out digitally so you can see a projection of your expected results before treatment even begins.
Aligner Fabrication and Fitting
Your custom aligners are fabricated by Invisalign’s lab and shipped to us. At your fitting appointment, any small tooth-coloured attachments that help the aligners grip the teeth are bonded in place. You receive your first several sets of trays along with full instructions on how to wear, remove, and care for them.
Wearing Your Aligners
Aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day to stay on track with your treatment plan. You switch to a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks. Regular check-in appointments allow us to monitor your progress and ensure your teeth are tracking correctly with the plan.
Refinements and Retainers
At the end of your initial series of aligners, if any teeth have not tracked perfectly, refinement aligners are ordered at no extra cost. Once your final result is achieved, retainers are provided to hold your teeth in their new positions and protect your investment long term.
Tips for Getting the Best Results
- Wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day without exception
- Only remove them to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss
- Clean your aligners daily with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water
- Never eat or drink hot beverages while wearing aligners as heat can warp the plastic
- Brush and floss before reinserting aligners after meals
- Keep your case with you at all times so you have somewhere to store your aligners safely when they are out

Most private dental insurance plans with orthodontic benefits cover a portion of Invisalign treatment, typically between $1,500 and $3,000 as a lifetime orthodontic benefit. Invisalign FAQs
How long does Invisalign take?
Treatment length depends on the complexity of your case. Minor corrections with Invisalign Express can be completed in as little as three to six months. Most moderate adult cases take eight to twenty months. Your dentist will give you a projected timeline at your consultation based on your specific treatment plan.
Does Invisalign hurt?
Invisalign is generally more comfortable than traditional braces. You may experience mild pressure or soreness for a day or two when you switch to a new set of aligners, as your teeth are adjusting to the new position. This is normal and temporary. There are no wires or brackets to irritate the inside of your mouth.
How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners?
Aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day to stay on track with your treatment plan. The only times they should be removed are for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing and flossing.
Can I eat normally with Invisalign?
Yes. Because the aligners are removable, there are no food restrictions with Invisalign. Simply remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water, and brush before reinserting them.
Is Invisalign suitable for teenagers?
Yes. Invisalign Teen is designed specifically for younger patients and includes compliance indicators to help track wear time, as well as free replacement aligners in case any are lost or damaged. We will assess whether Invisalign or traditional braces are the better fit during your consultation.
Is Invisalign covered by insurance?
Most private dental insurance plans with orthodontic benefits cover Invisalign the same as traditional braces, typically up to a lifetime maximum of $1,500 to $3,000. Invisalign is not covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Our team offers direct billing and will help you understand and maximise your coverage before treatment begins.
What happens after Invisalign treatment?
Once your final result is achieved, you will be provided with retainers to hold your teeth in their new positions. Wearing your retainers as directed is essential to maintaining your results long term. Without retainers, teeth can gradually shift back toward their original positions.
How is Invisalign different from braces?
Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners with no wires or brackets, making it far more discreet and comfortable than traditional braces. It is best suited to mild to moderate alignment cases. Traditional braces are fixed, more visible, but can be more effective for complex bite corrections. Your dentist will recommend the best option based on your specific orthodontic needs.
